Géraldine Gontier, PhD
I am a neuroscientist and independent scientific consultant with over 17 years of research experience spanning neuroscience, aging biology, and biotechnology drug development.
My scientific career began in academic research, investigating the molecular mechanisms of brain aging and neurodegeneration. Following my PhD in neuroscience in Paris, I conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), focusing on brain aging, epigenetics, and age-related cognitive decline. My research contributed to understanding the role of Tet2 in adult neurogenesis and cognitive function, resulting in a first-author publication in Cell Reports (2018). I also contributed to research on circulating factors mediating the beneficial effects of exercise on the aging brain, published in Science (2020).
I subsequently transitioned into biotechnology, contributing to drug discovery and preclinical development programs targeting neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, ALS, and frontotemporal dementia, as well as metabolic diseases such as obesity and MASH. My experience spans small molecules and antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), with a focus on in-vivo pharmacology, preclinical PK/PD, and translational biomarkers.
At Verge Genomics, I built and led the in-vivo PK/PD pharmacology function and served as a translational biomarker lead, working closely with cross-functional teams to advance preclinical programs and support drug candidate selection. A key contribution was the development and validation of GPNMB as a translational pharmacodynamic biomarker for PIKfyve inhibition in ALS, bridging preclinical studies and early clinical development. This work resulted in a co-first-author publication in Clinical and Translational Science (2026).
Today, I work as an independent scientific consultant, supporting biotech companies and academic laboratories with preclinical pharmacology strategy, translational biomarker development, and data-driven decision-making.
